Good morning dear friends!

We are now back in Cyprus, after 1 wonderful day in Athens (Greece) and 10 fantastic days visiting my husband’s family in Belgrade (Serbia). I am currently in full photo editing mode, so I will start posting about our trip very soon, but, in the meantime, and while I get all that and a few other personal things finished, I thought I could share with you a list of my very favorite blogs and sources of inspiration from around the web.

I have been following some of these blogs for a few years , while some others are fairly new in my feeder. They all feel to me like old friends, I love them and read them all frequently and I hope that you will love them too.

So here they are, with a little explanation of the reasons why I love them. Go ahead, read on, pay them a visit and get inspired!

A quick list of my favorite blogs:

I- Favorite blogs on food and baking- the ones that make me want to run to the kitchen and that have inspired to learn new things

Call me cupcake: Linda writes, from Sweden, one of my favorite blogs in the whole wide world. Yes, I like it that much. I have tried several of her recipes and they are all delicious and turn out perfect. Her macarons are easy to do and to die for. Her chocolate espresso cupcakes are heavenly. And don’t get me started on her photography or the fact that she also plays in a band called “Death in the Afternoon” (you can hear their music in her videos). A wonderful blog from a multi-talented lady.

Sweetapolita: Rosie writes from Canada and her blog is sweet as cotton candy. If you need cake inspiration, this is one of the best places to go for it.

Tartelette: The first food blog I read and the reason I fell in love with food photography. Hélène’s styles food to perfection, and her photography makes me dream of quiet meals with friends, grandma’s cooking and family gatherings. She cooks gluten free and her book, Plate to Pixel is my food photography bible.

Cannelle et Vanille : I started visiting Aran’s blog for her photography, in the late nights of 2008, when I was unable to fall back asleep after breastfeeding Luka and Zoe. I would spend hours browsing her beautiful pictures, where I was always struck by her incredible use of light, the sweet colors and styling of her photos and the warmth of her words. Aran’s book, Small Plates and Sweet Treats, published last year, is the most beautiful one I own. Every page is delightful.

Brave Tart Stella demystified macaron baking for me, and made me believe that I, too, could make some! That alone is a reason to love her, don’t you agree? But that’s not all: I also bought a kitchen scale and an oven thermometer because of her recommendations and I am forever grateful I did. I dream of going to Kentucky to taste her desserts but, until I am able to, I will have to continue making them at home. Look at these blueberry violet tarts with a white chocolate yuzu crust for a perfect example of her talent. She has a book coming soon, and I can’t wait to get it!

Glorious Treats: A wonderful blog, with perfect, fool proof recipes and detailed instructions for decorating cookies with royal icing.

The Sweet Adventures of Sugar Belle: OMG her cookies. That’s all I will say. You have to go and see for yourself!

II- Food blogs where the words are as yummy as the recipes in them

Tea and Cookies: Tea writes so beautifully, there’s so much heart put into each word that, after reading her posts, I find myself thinking about them for hours. This blog post is just an example of what I mean.

Not without Salt: Gorgeous pictures, beautiful writing and an inspiring series called “Dating my husband”

David Lebovitz: David is a professional American pastry chef who lives in Paris. His recipes are incredibly good, and his writing is funny and entertaining. He also organizes gastronomic tours in different cities in Europe, which I would love to take one day.

The wednesday chef: I started reading this blog after Tea reviewed Luisa’s book My Berlin Kitchen. Tea linked to THIS POST and I loved it so much that I kept reading one blog post after another. I didn’t get the book yet but, hey, my birthday is next week, so maybe I will soon

III- Favorite blogs on healthy eating

My new roots I love Sarah Britton because she professes her love for whole food (which I share), without being judgy or fundamentalist about it. Her recipes are delicious and she has inspired me to try new ingredients and taught me how to cook certain others that I had barely noticed in the supermarket aisles before.

Gourmande in the Kitchen : Oh the pictures of this blog!

My darling Lemon Thyme: A beautiful blog with gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian recipes that are as delicious as they look in Emma’s pictures. The blog has a garden section that has inspired me to grow crops in pots this Summer (a post on that is coming soon!)

IV- Favorite blogs on design, crafts, parties and all things pretty

Going Home to Roost: Pretty, pretty, pretty. And girlie. And sweet. And inspiring. Those are just some of the words that come to my mind when I think about Bonnie’s blog. Read it to get recipes, inspiration, craft projects, gardening and biz advice, and ideas on simple living.

Decor8: A classic, an amazing source of daily inspiration.

Camille Styles: Camille is so stylish, that her blog is a real feast for the eyes. I particularly love her table settings, just gorgeous.

Damask love: I started following Amber after she guest posted for the TomKat studio, but I fell in love with her when she organized the fundraiser for the children of Newtown. Pretty crafts, beautiful cards, lovely, lively writing. You will love it.

Griottes: This blog is so pretty there are no words to describe it. You have to see it for yourself (in French).

Good morning dear friends!

We are still in Belgrade, enjoying the beautiful Spring days with our family and taking daily strolls with Luka and Zoe around the city.

Everything has been very quiet around here these past days because of the extended holiday of Labor Day and the Orthodox Easter, so the city, which is normally booming with energy, has had a lovely calm, leisure-like feeling, pretty much like the one you get on a vacation resort by the sea. Really, really nice and relaxing

Today’s post, however, is not about Belgrade. It is a recipe I came up with in my quest to get my children to eat vegetables! I had seen online and read about different cakes and brownies made with veggies inside, but all the recipes I could find used dairy which, as you know, is an ingredient that Luka and I shouldn’t eat. So I decided to experiment a bit, and, after a few trials, I came up with this recipe. To make it even yummier, I also made a frosting that, instead of butter and tons of sugar, uses avocado and honey. And the best part? It tastes delicious!

I like to make this cake in a sheet cake or brownie pan because it’s ideal for cutting into small bites. One word of caution, though: The addition of the veggies makes this cake EXTREMELY moist, so make sure that it’s cold when you cut it. It is actually a good idea to put it in the fridge for 20 minutes before doing so, and to use a sharp knife dipped in hot water to do so.

And don’t worry: this cake does not taste like salad! If you let it cool down appropriately, you won’t be able to tell there are veggies inside. I advise you, though, to make it with your children because I think it is a good idea for them to get used to the idea that vegetables can be part of food they like. The more they get used to you making vegetables a part of their diet, the more normal they will seem to them and, hopefully, they will be willing to try them in other ways as well.

Here is the recipe:

Chocolate sheet cake and frosting, with hidden veggies (dairy free, egg free)

Ingredients: 100 grs dark chocolate (70%), 1 cup vegetable milk, 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1/3 cup oil, 1 cup sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 1 cup beet puree, 1/2 cup carrot puree, 1/4 cup spinach puree, 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup cocoa, 3/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt. For the frosting: 1 avocado, 1/2 cup honey (or agave), 2 tablespoons cocoa

Preparation:

1) Put the chocolate in a bowl, then place the bowl over a pot of boiling water and let it melt. Once it has melted, set aside and let it cool.

2) Put the milk in a bowl and add the vinegar. Wait a few minutes, until it curdles.

3) Add oil, sugar and vanilla and beat until incorporated.

4) Sift flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and baking soda.

5) Add 1/2 the flour mixture to the liquid ingredients and mix well.

6) Add the vegetables to the batter. Mix well.

7) Add the rest of the flour. Mix well to incorporate fully.

8) Add the melted chocolate and mix very well for a few minutes.

9) Grease a pan and dust it with cocoa. Pour the batter in it, tap it against the counter to divide it evenly and remove any air bubbles, and place it in the oven, pre heat at 175 degrees, for about 1 hour, or until a knife stuck in the middle comes out clean.

10)Once fully cooked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool.

11) Make the frosting: Peel the avocado, remove the flesh and mash it with a fork. Add honey and cocoa and beat until light and fluffy. You may use an electric mixer if you have one.

12) Once the cake has cooled down, add the frosting on top. Place it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes, cut into small square bites and enjoy!

Do you hide vegetables in desserts? Which is your favorite recipe? Please share in the comments!

Good evening dear friends!

I am writing today’s post from Belgrade, Serbia, where we are currently visiting my husband’s family. Cyprus follows the Orthodox calendar, according to which Easter falls on May 5th this year, so we are taking advantage of Luka and Zoe’s brief break from school for a short family trip. I will tell you all about it when I get back home!

These truffles, which are ridiculously easy to make and are full of food that is good for our bodies, were made before I left and devoured by my family. If you read the two last posts, you already know that my children are picky eaters and that I keep looking for ideas to get them to eat food that tastes delicious but that also provides them with the nutrients they need in order to grow up healthy, food that helps them thrive.

These little balls of goodness may do just that. I came up with them while playing in the kitchen, trying to recreate my favorite store-bought nut bars (which are way too expensive for me to buy them too often). I looked at the list of ingredients in the package, figured out the percentages that seemed more accurate to me, added a few super foods and decided to try the method that I detail below. I considered for a while whether it would be better to soak nuts and dates before hand, but didn’t, even though I will probably try that method in the future as well, at least to compare which one I like best.

These truffles are ideal to make with kids, because of their simplicity. If you don’t like any of the ingredients, feel free to replace it for something similar (I do that all the time). And did I mention that they have no added sugar?

Do you want to try them now?

Here is the recipe:

Raw vegan truffles with dates, nuts and berries (makes around 40)

Ingredients: 250 grs dates, 160 grs cashews, 100 grs currants or raisins, 15 grs goji berries, 15 grs dried cranberries, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 3 tablespoons water, shredded coconut for rolling the truffles in it (optional)

Preparation.

1) Put the cashews in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until they turn into flour.

2) Add the pitted dates, currants or raisins, berries, chia seeds and water. Process until you get a dough that separates from the sides of the bowl.

3) Put the dough in an airtight container and put it in the refrigerator for 1/2 hour.

4) Remove from the refrigerator. Take small pieces of dough with a teaspoon and form them into balls. You may then roll the balls on shredded coconut, as in the pictures, or leave them without. It’s your choice.

5) Keep stored in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to a week.

Good morning dear friends!

As promised, here is the second post about ways to cure picky eating habits, with the 14 tips list itself. I hope it will hlp you design a strategy that is right for your family, and to end mealtime struggles.

Here are Claire’s tips:

14 tips to cure your child’s picky eating

1) The very first one is DON’T PANIC. Quite often, fussiness is more about control than it is about the food in question. If you get stressed, your kids will know, and they’ll push that stress button of yours as much as they can. Unless there is a specific and urgent health matter going on, trust that your kids will be ok.

2) If your child is not eating at all, check what else may be going on (see Part I of this post here for more details).

3) Establish a mealtime routine. Kids need regularity.

4) If your mealtimes have turned into a battle ground, see if your children can have a meal with someone else to see whether they eat or not.

5) Offer something fresh at every meal: fruits, veggies, nuts or seeds.

6) Make it a vague rule that people do have to try foods. I say ‘vague’ because just making it a rule won’t work. Instead, when your kids say they’ve finished, and want their pudding now, just sweetly remind them to try the green beans/sauce or whatever. They’ll fight it, but if they know that pudding is waiting on them just sticking one tiny piece of greenery in their mouths, they may well be up for it.

7) If your kids nag you for food when they come home from school, happily give in by only offering them a raw piece of the veg that they will be having later. So, if you are chopping cabbage, just give them a piece of cabbage. If you make it clear that the only snack is the same as what they’ll be eating later, they’ll either take it, or quit asking. It might take a few days to get it to sink in, but once it does, you’ll be happy regardless of whether they eat the raw veg or just leave you alone

8) The Spring is a great time to really move picky eaters forward. Our bodies naturally want to eat less fatty, sugary foods in the Spring, mainly because we don’t need to be storing up energy to survive the Winter. Our bodies naturally crave the magnesium in green veg and it craves the freshness of fresh foods. If there was one time of year when the odds are in your favour for getting your children to prefer healthy foods, it is NOW!

To take full advantage of the Spring, you could try growing your own foods such as sprouted green lentils, cress and salad leaves all grow super fast. Kids are so much more likely to try foods which they helped to grow. But remember, you have to take part too – if you sit there thinking that this is all rabbit foods, please don’t be surprised if your kids think the same. You may well enjoy the sunshine that seems to burst from fresh foods yourself!

9)Foods that are great for the Spring are all the ones which are appearing where you live – fresh leafy things, fruits and veg that are coming up now are perfect. And they taste better. A fresh orange picked from your tree tastes sooo much better than an orange flown in from half-way around the world. Go fruit picking perhaps, or visit a farm so that you have a good idea of what is in season, but also so that your child can develop an independent idea about food without your direct input.

10) Make your own salad dressing. Seriously. My kids will eat any kind of salad, because they have been trained by my nifty take on a salad dressing to love it. I take olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a dash of honey to sweeten it up a tad and splash it on a salad. Now, even if there is no dressing, my kids will happily eat plenty of salad.

11) Don’t confuse your children. They will watch and learn from you. If you only eat salad when you are on diet, or you make jokes about eating grass when you serve up broccoli, your kids will know that your heart isn’t in it, and they’ll feel just the same. If you at least try something new, or make an effort to have a mouthful or two of something that you don’t really like, they’ll see it, do their best to ignore it, but at least the precedent has been set. You can then say ‘I don’t like peas either, but I always try a few just in case these are the ones that I will like’. (or something similar).

12) Get Dr Seuss book ‘Green Eggs and Ham’- it has been a brilliant addition to our family because it’s all about trying new foods and really does inspire kids. And give massive praise at mealtimes for trying something, and don’t worry if they don’t like it.

13) One of my biggest bug-bears and one which we all do (myself included occasionally) is when a child says ‘I don’t like that’ and we say ‘Yes you do’. It totally negates the little bit of power that the child is trying to put out there. Instead of telling them that they do like it, try just saying ‘Ok. Well, I’ve given you a little bit so you can see how you feel today’ and leave it at that. Remember, it’s all about the power – let them have a little bit of power when they want it, and they won’t then be fighting with you in every other way.

14)Hiding veggies and fruit is absolutely a brilliant way to get kids to eat food. But I am not really one for being sneaky. My reason for suggesting this is that it helps to slowly, without stress, train their taste buds. For example: my daughter HATES courgette. With a passion. But, I’ll make a pasta sauce, with some grated courgette in it. She eats it, perfectly happily. So, her taste buds get to experience the courgette and realize that it isn’t something strange. She gets the lovely goodies in courgette without having to feel she is being forced to eat something she doesn’t like. And I get to know that it’s not the TASTE of courgettes that she doesn’t like, it’s the texture. If that sounds a bit crazy, hear this: I only like courgette if it is finely cut up. Big bits of courgette turn my stomach. Why? I have no idea, but I can totally relate to her story. Eating isn’t just about the taste, it’s about the texture, the look, the smell of foods. Children can’t explain this – they just either ‘like’ it or they ‘don’t like’ it. Hiding foods, or changing the texture is a great way to explore foods without the stress of actually ‘trying’ something. Be careful though – if you hide a vegetable in foods, and your child then hates the food even though they aren’t aware that there is something in the food, there is the slight chance the food doesn’t suit them which is making them dislike it. So, as an example, they may be slightly intolerant to it, perhaps. Finally, be mindful and gentle with yourself: it is hard and you are not alone in this battle. Sometimes you have to step back and trust in your child. Give them the right tools, and you might well be surprised by what they will eat. Try not to do what we all do, which is worry that they haven’t eaten enough and give a sugary pudding or treat when they refuse their food so that they ‘have at least eaten something’. Kids are fast learners, and if you do want them to try new foods, you just have to go with the flow and trust they’ll eat enough if the good stuff is there.

So, there you have it. I don’t have all the answers because each and every child is different, and each and every parent is different. It would take me hours to give all the possible solutions that I know, and even they might not be enough. But take a look through the list above, and see if one or two or three of my suggestions sound like something that would work for you.If you are really struggling, I’d love to help you. Drop me an email, and outline your problem, and I’ll get back to you with a couple of suggestions crafted just for you. They might or might not work (who can tell), but sometimes you just need an outside eye on a problem that is close to your heart.Sign up to my website - and get a short (but sweet) list of some of my favourite nutrition books. There are two books all about children and food in that list, both of which not only got me through the weaning and toddler years, but are still useful to me now, both as a nutritionist, and as the mum of two girls who know exactly what they like to eat and precisely what they don’t! Ahh, that’s got me thinking – I can’t remember who likes cooked carrots again this week.

Isn’t Claire wonderful? I love her tips because they are easy to put in practice, all we need is little courage to get started and to brace ourselves for the initial resistance we may encounter.

Did you like the tips? Which are the ones you are most likely to put in practice soon/that you think will work better for your children? Please, share in the comments below!

Con sabor latino…

Buenos dias queridos amigos!

11) No confundas a tus hijos.

Good morning , my name is Marcela, and my children are terribly picky eaters. If any of you knows a support group for mothers of extremely picky eaters, let me know because I would like to join.

Yes, Luka and Zoe are picky eaters, and it’s not because I haven’t tried. I read every book and followed every recommendation and, until 18 months, they ate absolutely everything. Ah, mealtime was such a joy! I would prepare purées and finger food full of vegetables and fruits, and everything that’s good and they would eat it with joy. Then, at 18 months, a picky monster possessed them and they started refusing pretty much everything. I, of course, panicked. I tried many strategies and some of them worked with different degrees of success but, to this day, Luka and Zoe are still not eating as many vegetables as I, in my mothering heart, know they should. To be honest, neither did I at their age, but don’t tell my children! (Mum, especially you!

This year, I decided that, if I was going to change this state of affairs, I needed help. So I contacted Claire Stone, whom I met at Life is Messy Bootcamp. Claire, who lives in Bristol, England, is a Nutritional Therapist and she sees food as a way to improve our health and well being. She believes in the importance of passing good life long habits to our children and she understand the confusion that us, parents, feel when faced with the wide array of information that is available on what is good and what not, and that this makes trying to figure out the best way to eat and feed a child something of a minefield. I chose Claire for this post because she is not only knowledgeable, but also funny, kind and understanding, all qualities that I find especially important in an area that triggers so much mother’s guilt.

So, If you too are facing the challenge of feeding a picky eater, I think you will love Claire’s ideas as much as I did. And if you have cured your chid’s picky eating, I would love to hear your own strategies as well, so please share them in the comments below. ( Note: because of the length of today’s post, I have divided in two. The second part will be published tomorrow, so be sure to come back!)

With you, Claire:

1- I know many mums who stress a lot about their children’s eating habits (like myself, ahem). How do you feel about your children’s eating habits, as a nutritionist and a mum?

It’s hard being a mum. Not knowing what to give your kids to eat. Not knowing what they should or shouldn’t be eating, especially if all they want is the opposite to what you want them to eat.

Being a nutritionist and a mum almost feels harder. There is that constant battle inside my head with one side just wanting my kids to join in the fun of chomping chocolate at Easter. At the same time, the other side of my brain won’t let them drink soda drinks unless there is no alternative (which there always is, as I keep a couple of cartons of juice in my bag at parties so they get to have a treat)

It’s hard because, if I allowed myself, I would stress every single day that they don’t get their full amount of enzyme-rich live foods, and I’d worry about all the pressure from other folks about letting them have a ‘treat’.

But I am not complaining. I realise that I do have it easy. I look at the foods they get, and I know straight away that they are doing fine. I know exactly what it is that gives my daughter earache, and I know what they want to eat when they are feeling ill (sprouted green lentils).

2- Are your kids picky eaters?

Now, here’s the thing: My kids LOVE salad. Yes they do. They also LOVE nuts and seeds, and think a homemade cookie sweetened with honey and cinnamon are an amazing treat. They pester me for food when I am cooking, and then run off happily when I give them a stalk of broccoli to keep them happy until the food is served. I’m not smug about it – I am mega grateful because it could change at any moment. This is just the way it is right now. And I am so glad about that, otherwise I’d feel that I was a pretty crappy nutritionist otherwise.

Now, that’s not to say my kids aren’t fussy when it suits them. I can’t get the eldest to try anything with a hint of spice in it, and the youngest can spot aslice of courgette in a gallon of pasta sauce without even pausing for breath. It’s a child’s right to be fussy, and I firmly believe that you have to go with it.

To a certain extent.

3- That’s the key, right?, But when is it acceptable to give in? Which is the acceptable extent and where should one draw the line?

Children need to be able to chose, within certain boundaries. If you let them choose their foods without any guidance at all, you’d soon end up with a child who will only eat chips, burgers and cakes, and then you’d have a whole lot of worrying to do, for a bit.If you can lead them down the right path, you’ll be able to trust them when they do, or don’t choose a certain food. The food which affects kids taste buds the very most is sugar. Sugar literally pollutes their taste buds in such a way that it then becomes almost impossible to like something which isn’t sweet. Think about it. Kids need energy to grow. Sugar is pure energy and they are programmed to love the taste of energy. Broccoli is energy, combined with loads of other goodies. But the energy in broccoli just doesn’t hit the taste buds in the same way that sugar does. So the more you can steer clear of sugar (and artificial sweeteners), the less likely you are to have to deal with fussiness at the dining table.

4- Let’s talk about extremely picky eaters. How do you deal with kids who refuse to eat and are losing weight?

This is a tricky one, because we are all very aware that kids are supposed to be growing, and when they are losing weight, we feel very very anxious. The first point is to bear in mind that quite a few things might be going on, and only a few of those might have anything to do with their fussiness. As a parent, we do tend to over-worry about food, mainly because we have lost our innate senses when it comes to eating. Children, in the main, have not lost the impulses that come with eating. So, if your child won’t eat anything that you give them, don’t panic. They will pick up on your panic, and that doesn’t help. Second – consider what your child does actually eat rather than just what he or she doesn’t eat. For example, children will often ‘graze’ through the day, getting plenty of food in, and simply not be hungry at mealtimes. If your child has had a change of routine (such as the school holidays) they might be eating more snacks during the day, and literally have no room for a meal. And if that meal isn’t their top-fave (which isn’t likely to be a healthy salad), then you are going to have trouble persuading them to eat. So, if possible, reduce the snacks so that they are hungrier at mealtimes. If your child really isn’t eating much at all, again, don’t panic. When children are ill, or getting ill, they will often very naturally go off food. It means that their clever little bodies can spend energy tackling the illness, rather than just eating. Sounds crazy, but it’s very true. We tend to worry that they need to eat every day, but if they are ill, sure, offer some food, but try not to worry if they don’t want it. Once they start to get better, their appetite will go through the roof, and then you will feel sooo much better!

If your child is just not eating at all, there are three further possibilities:

1. If your child has recently had a growth spurt, they may well just not need much right now. Again, offer food, and don’t stress if they don’t want it.

2. They may be constipated which is causing them to not feel hungry or not want to eat so that they don’t need to go to the toilet. If that is a possibility, you may want to speak to a doctor or a nutritionist.

3. They may have something going on which needs to be checked by a doctor. Don’t worry though – most of the time it will be something very simple, but just book an appointment, and see what they say.

5- How do we start introducing new foods to a child who won’t eat any vegetable or fruit? Is there any thing that we should prioritize?

Aha, a great questions. It’s very easy to over-think a problem, and cause many nights of worry. The simple fact is that our bodies, and those of our children need such a huge variety of nutrients (some of which might not have even been discovered yet!) that we can’t possibly cover them all. In terms of eating, the MOST important point to remember is that in order to grow, children need love. More than ANYTHING else, aside from water and oxygen, they need love. So, if you are giving them your love (and by that, I mean if you are doing your best – whatever that might be – to feed them well), you are already succeeding.

The next thing that they need is a little bit of what I call ‘routine’ but it isn’t really routine as such. It’s the regularity of knowing what will happen when it comes to food. So, the whole mealtime ritual becomes very important for children, especially fussy ones. If you keep on changing the way that meals happen, there is no ritual or routine to the habit of eating. So, for example, try to have a sit down meal, if possible, with folks taking time together to eat so that children see you use a knife and a fork, or chopsticks to eat, and get to enjoy the routine of a meal. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to force a wild family schedule into a little box of perfection, but if your child gets to see that this is when and how we eat, rather than you desperately giving them something, (anything!), when they ask for it because you are worried about their eating, they will slowly begin to associate mealtimes with eating. Notice, I am not saying you must make them eat all their food at a mealtime, if they really aren’t up for it. But it’s the routine, the family time, the camaraderie of eating together which is more important than the actual foods. If this seems impossible for you, then try to work out how you can at least make your child’s meals have a regular pattern – so, they set out the cutlery, or they pour everyone a glass of water, or something like that.

Finally, getting to the actual foods: our bodies crave fresh foods, especially in the Spring. We often don’t know that they do, but they surely do. So, it doesn’t matter what you offer, just try something fresh – fruit, veg, nuts or seeds. Whatever might tempt your child. Again, it’s not a problem if they don’t want it. Just keep the fresh stuff coming and they see you happily eat it (you do happily eat it, don’t you? If you don’t, then try working on your taste buds first – and then your children will likely follow suit!). That said (and there are always exceptions), try not to worry too much. For the longest time as a child, I only ate fish fingers, chips and baked beans. My mum wasn’t too happy, but always stuck a raw carrot on the side (my fave) and that was that.

Have you noticed how children will often eat different foods when they aren’t with their parents? That’s not just because they are with friends, or the food is different, but because the stress of having a watchful parent, whose soul is willing the child to eat some peas, is gone. I know for a fact that if someone is telling me that I HAVE to do something, every bone in my body wants me to do the opposite, and I imagine it’s quite the same for children. They can feel that you want them to eat their veg, even if you aren’t saying anything all. If you are having some big old food battles, try seeing if there is someone else they could share a meal with, just to get you out of the picture (I know that sounds harsh, but it can make a massive difference! My niece eats almost anything when she is with me. If her mum is here though, she refuses almost all veg. It’s not because I am special – it’s just because I am not her mum!)

Ready for the tips?!

Y repito: no te hagas problema si no lo come.

Good morning dear friends!

Today I bring you a super simple way to set the table for Spring, in a very cheerful yellow colour.

I love yellow, it’s so bright and happy. It makes me think of sunny days, long lunches under the shade of a tree, friends, laughter and happy conversations. So, the other day, when we went to Ikea and I saw that they had a yellow and white stripped tablecloth in the kitchen section, I didn’t hesitate a second, and bought it. I knew it was going to bring cheer to my days.

Then, as soon as I came home, I started thinking about other yellow things I had around the house: pretty kitchen towels, forgotten ribbon scraps, and a set of four yellow glasses that I bough a while ago. I put them all together and decided to use them in a festive, yet easy, tablescape to surprise my husband (he has been studying hard for an MBA and last Monday he sat for an exam).

As you already know if you have been reading this blog for a few months, I like tablescapes that are simple and child friendly, so that if a plate accidentally breaks or a glass of whine spills over the tablecloth, no one feels bad and there’s no drama. This is the way I actually set the table for a special occasion at home, or when we entertain some friends: without too much fuss. I also want to show you easy ways to make a table look a bit prettier, so that you can reproduce them at home, if you like them.

I started with my new tablecloth (I normally use my white linen tablecloth, which you can see here, here, here and here), our plain white dishes, stainless steel cutlery and white linen napkins, which I tied with yellow ribbon. Since it was just a family lunch, I didn’t add any place cards, but you can easily make some with cardboard if you like to.

I then added yellow water glasses (they are made of plastic) and everyday wine glasses, which are small and not as fancy as these ones. I covered our bread basket with a kitchen towel in yellows, greens and oranges, and placed a few gerberas that I had bought that morning in milk bottles. Finally, I tied a silk butterfly to the improvised vases and the table was ready!

Do you like to take some extra time to prettify your table?

Which colors do you normally chose when you do?

Please, share in the comments below!

Good evening dear friends!

I had a different post planned for today, but my dear Amanda, from Poppies and Ice cream, nominated me for a Liebster Award meme, and I thought it would be fun to use it as a opportunity to share some random facts about me that you may not know. If you are not familiar with memes, the idea is that I have to share some random facts about me and answer some questions, and then pass it to someone else, so that we get to know more about the persons we interact with in the blogosphere.

So here go 15 random facts about me, followed by my replies to Amanda’s questions:

1- My mum is the best party planner I know and she is capable of transforming a room with paper and scissors. She always gave us the best parties and we always looked forward to our birthdays. In the picture at the beginning of this post you can see some of the pictures from my bunny 1st year old birthday, my “Dutch girl” 3rd year old, my “princess” 5 year old party, as well as the party were we had magicians and a troubadour.

2- I didn’t have a 6 year old birthday party because I was grounded and lost my right to it. I used to throw HUGE tantrums for no reason and I was, frankly speaking, quite impossible, so my parents took away the one thing I loved the most: my birthday party. It worked, that was the last tantrum I ever had.

3- I never thought about myself as someone creative. It still surprises that I now have so many hobbies that imply me doing something with my hands!

4- I was always a nerd, and a bookworm. Libraries make my eyes tingle. My dream would be to have the one from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, or at least to be allowed to go read there as often as I want to.

5- This one is related to fact#4: I have no idea what professors mean when they talk about “suggested or recommended reading”. I am an obsessive student and need to know EVERYTHING to feel safe at the time of an exam. So anything that is “suggested” (or sometimes even just mentioned) ends up in the reading list. That’s why, for example, I read 32 books while studying Jurisprudence and Legal Theory (during my LL.M) even if the compulsory reading included just 1. (I’m glad I did).

6) I love to sing but I’m tone deaf. So I sing in the shower, like Fabio Armiliato’s character in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love

7) When I was 17 years old, my best friend and I buried a time capsule in the backyard of our country side home. We retrieved it and opened it 6 years later (the picture below shows us with the contents of the box on the day. We were drying them because we hadn’t sealed the box properly and they were wet).

8) I have a freakishly good memory for unimportant things, such as dates when things happened. I can easily remember what I did on September 7th 1992, for example (I went to a party at my friend Melina’s house. See, I told you).

9) I lived 2 1/2 years in Ivory Coast and those years changed my life completely. In the picture below, you can see me in the Comoé region, next to a cocoa tree

10) I am an originally blonde turned bottle brunette because I have white hair

11) I have a travelling troll, just like the garden dwarf from Amélie. He has been with me since January 1994 (I told you I was good with dates) and has traveled with me all over the World. The picture below is from the times I lived Ivory Coast. My team and I were having breakfast at a café in Bouaké, and I took a picture of the Troll on the UN Prado. I guess we can say that he was a UN Peacekeeping Troll for a while.

12) I learn languages easily. That’s probably my best talent.

13) I love Opera and have been known for tearing up when listening to it. Such an Italian cliché, I know, but I can’t deny my blood

14) My husband and I met in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on the day I arrived. We started dating 1 week after my arrival and got engaged 1 month after that. The picture below is our first one together.

15) My husband and I got married in Florence, Italy, 5 1/2 months after the day we met. It was the happiest day of my life. I wore a black suit and a hat.

Now here are my answers to Amanda’s questions:

1-If you could live anywhere, where would that be?

Hmm, this is a difficult one, because I would like to live in many places and experience living in different cultures…but if I had to settle somewhere, I would probably chose Florence, Italy (Firenze). It’s my favorite city in the World (well, the parts of the World that I know)

2- Given the chance, which magic power would you choose?

Healing, the body, the mind and the soul. Healing broken relationships, ill sentiments, bringing peace where there is war, bringing smiles where there are tears, bringing hope to those who have lost it.

3- If the genie-of-the-lamp appeared to you, what would you ask?

The magic power above. And a Canon 5D Mark III with a couple of lenses

4- Do you recommend any books?

Yes! Just off the top of my head:

-One hundred years of solitude, by Gabriel García Marquez,

-Rayuela (Hopscotch), by Julio Cortazar

- Everything by Milan Kundera

- Anything by Krishnamurti

- A long walk to freedom (Nelson Mandela’s autobiography)

- A lucky child (the memoir of Judge Buergenthal’s surviving Auschwitz)

- The books by Ahmadou Kourouma on the conflict in Ivory Coast: Allah n’est pas obligé, Quand on refuse on dit non, les soleils des indépendances.

- Closed doors (Huis clos) by Jean Paul Sartre (I had an existentialist phase when I was 14. I used to dress all in black and read Sartre, Camus and de Beauvoir. Ah, the teenage years…)

5- What made you start blogging?

I wanted to share the things I was learning with my family and friends. To my delight, this community grew and I found people reading my ramblings that I didn’t know before. Thank you all for being there!

6- What is making you happy right now?

Lots of things, little things: my kids laughter, my husband’s hugs, the sunny day outside my window, a nice cup of tea, the yellow gerberas that I bought yesterday at the market and that are gracing my living room, beautiful music, new friends, new projects, new beginnings. I believe happiness is in the small things.

7- What is your favorite food?

I don’t know if I have a favorite food, I like different things at different times. But my Italian heritage dictates that I’m always in the mood for pasta!

8- Favorite fairy-tale?

Beauty and the Beast.

9- Are you a nomad or do you feel bound to your “roots”?

A nomad, definitely.

10- The best place you’ve ever visited?

What do you mean by best? My favorite city is Florence, because it breathes art and it’s perfect

11- Happiest memory from childhood?

I can’t remember…probably the day my brother was born. I was so excited to have a little brother!

Now I pass this award to:

- Raquel, from Dessine- moi un doudou

- Claire, from Nutrition Out and In

- Haroulla, from Sugabelle

- Natascha, from Puple Peacock Jewellery

- Marbel, from Imagination Creature

And here are my questions to them:

1- What is your biggest talent?

2- What is your biggest fear?

3- What makes you happy?

4- What did you dream of being when you were a child?

5- Is there anywhere other than your home city where you would like to live?

6- Do you have any heroes or people you admire? who inspires you?

7- Which is your favorite movie?

8- Which is your favorite book?

9- Do you read blogs? If so, can you recommend your favorite?

10- What do you know now that you wished you had known 10 years ago?

I hope you liked this game and found it as fun as I did!

Now, if you want to, please share a few random facts about you in the comments below, so that we get to know each other better!

Con sabor latino…

Buenas noches queridos amigos!

4- Me recomendarías algun libro?

9- ¿Eres nomado o te consideras atado a tus raices?

- Claire, de Nutrition Out and In

9- Lees blogs? Me recomiendas tu preferido?

Good morning dear friends!

Today’s recipe was my monthly contribution to the Spanish website Petit-On. As I have mentioned before, each month I contribute a recipe based on an ingredient chosen by one of the blog’s contributors. To my utter delight, the ingredient for April was strawberries!

I love strawberries and, each year, I wait anxiously for April to arrive because I know that it’s strawberry season. I love their fragrant smell, their sweetness that goes so well with slightly tangy flavors, and the deep red of their skins. They are delicious and beautiful, a real feast for all senses. The funny thing is that I hated them when I was a child…but fortunately I have come to my senses since then!

Loving strawberries as I do, it took me a while to chose a recipe, but I finally decided to make this one, because what better way to greet the warmer weather and celebrate Spring than with a delicious ice cream?

As you will soon see, an added beauty of this recipe is that it takes very few ingredients: coconut milk, fresh strawberries, sugar and a splash of good vanilla, to enhance the strawberries natural flavor (I use vanilla bean paste but you may use vanilla extract if you want, or a vanilla pod). Yes, no milk, no cream and no eggs, which also means no need to make a custard, beat ingredients or anything like that. I warm up the milk with the sugar for a little while, so that the sugar cristals dissolve but you can also make it raw and just out all ingredients in a blender or food processor at the same time, process and refrigerate for a couple of hours before churning in an ice cream maker.

Here is the recipe:

Strawberry and coconut ice cream

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cup of strawberries , 1 can of coconut milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla bean paste/the seeds of 1 vanilla pod or 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Preparation:

1) Wash the strawberries, remove the leaves, cut them in half and put them in the bowl of a food processor or blender. Process and blend until they transform into a purée. Reserve.

2) Put coconut milk and sugar in a saucepan and bring to moderate heat for about 5 minutes, so that the sugar crystals dissolve. Remove from the heat, let cool down for a while and add vanilla.

3) Pour the sugared milk in the food processor/blender, together with the strawberry purée and pulse a few times to to integrate well.

4) Pour the preparation in a tall glass/bowl, cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before churning.

5) Remove the preparation from the refrigerator and churn in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. I use the KitchenAid ice cream attachment, with which it takes 15-20 minutes for the ice cream to reach soft consistency.

6) Remove the ice cream from the machine, put it in an airtight container and place it in the freezer for a couple of hours so that it reaches scoop consistency.

If you don’t have an ice cream machine, you can still make this recipe. In that case, instead of refrigerating the preparation as is required before churning, put it directly in the freezer, and remove it every 30 minutes during 2 hours, beating it vigorously every time, so as to break the ice crystals. You may also use it to make ice lollies, if you have the molds. They will be delicious either way!

Do you like to make ice cream at home? Do you have any food allergies that prevent you from eating ice cream at a shop? Let me know in the comments below and I promise I’ll do my best to come up with a recipe you can eat!

Almost one year ago, when Luka and Zoe were about to turn 4, we decided that their shared room needed a major re-haul. Their room had evolved in a disorganized way from the baby days to toddler-hood and, what had once been a cute baby room, had turned into a more or less well managed chaos.

The main problem was what I called “the toy storage situation”. It’s not that Luka and Zoe had that many toys, because we purge every 6 months, but that what they had didn’t have a place of its own. We had a couple of big toy baskets where everything was just thrown in at the end of the day and, even if you may think that this is a good idea because cleanup is easy, let me tell you this: it’s the opposite. When everything gets thrown into a big basket at the end of the day, nothing is easily found the following morning. Our living room’s floor (which is our main playing area because the rooms are rather small) was permanently covered in toys, the children were frustrated because they couldn’t find fast what they wanted and I was frustrated because the house was a constant mess. So we decided to do something about it, and started planning the new room.

I repainted the walls in white and we chose white furniture to make the room look a little bit bigger. We bought the beds, converted their old changing table into a bookshelf for Luka and Zoe’s books and big puzzles and, after measuring, re measuring and various visits to Ikea, we opted for their TROFAST toy storage system, which we adore. Big toys and teddies were placed in boxes under the beds, and everything else was stored in the TROFAST containers, with a preference for smaller ones, to allow greater classification. Toys inside some of the containers were also classified: small puzzles, for example, were placed inside different Ikea freezer bags, so that the different pieces wouldn’t get mixed up. Big, medium-sized and small toys were under control, hurray! Luka and Zoe loved the system and adapted in no time.

But until recently, we hadn’t found a solution for tiny toys…you know the ones, the cute little wooden pegs, the tiny puzzles or, if you have a little girl, the tiny hair accessories that seem to end up everywhere. The boxes I found in stores were either too big, too ugly, had no cover or costed a lot. Leaving the toys just laying on the shelves means that cleaning takes longer, so we had to come up with another solution…and we did!

What I am talking about? Origami boxes!

Materials needed? Only paper! And they are so easy, that you can make as many as you want, in whatever size you need and you can customize them for virtually no money. You don’t even need origami paper to make them, a simple sheet of paper will suffice. If your children are old enough, you can have fun making a few with them, and the decorate them together with some glitter, washi tape, ribbon, scrapbook paper and supplies, buttons or whatever you have in hand!

Let me show you how to do it:

For making each box you will need 2 sheets of paper. If you have a bone folder, it is handy for pressing the folds but if you don’t, don’t worry!. The paper needs to be squared, so if you are using regular A4 size sheets, you will need to trim them before you begin.

Now let’s get started!

1) Put the paper on the table, patterned side down (the white side should be facing you). Fold the paper in half, horizontally, making sure that the corners match perfectly. Then open the paper again and fold it vertically (lengthwise). Press with the bone folder (or your nails) and open it again.

2) The previous folds will have formed a cross. Fold each corner, so that they all meet at the center of the page. When you are done, your paper will look as the picture on the right.

3) Fold the bottom side of the paper in half, to meet the center. Make sure that it meets exactly the center of the page. Do the same with the upper side. When you are finished, your paper will look as in the picture on the right.

4) Open the bottom and upper folds. This time, fold the paper left and right side of the paper in half, so that they meet at the center (in the picture above I folded just one side to show you the mechanics)

5) Open the folds as in the picture on the left.

6) Take the paper with your hands, lift the sides slightly and press with your fingers on the upper corners to make a “reverse fold”.

7) Press the fold as in the picture of the left and, then, lift the upper side and fold the flap. When you are finished, it will look like the picture on the right.

8) Repeat the reverse fold on the other side, lift and fold the the flap. And you are done! Your box is ready!

Now, in order to make the box’s cover, you will need to make just one small variation to the steps shown above. Here’s the step by step explanation and a picture of the modification needed:

1) Take your sheet of paper and repeat steps 1 and 2 above.

2) Here’s what you need to do differently: When you come to steps 3 and 4, instead of folding the paper in half to meet the center, fold it just a few centimeters before it, as in the pictures above. This will make the cover slightly bigger than the box, so that you can close it.

3) Proceed with steps 5 to 8 as in the box pictures.

You are now ready to fill your box with whatever tiny thing is going around your children’s bedroom, or even in your desk (they are great for small pins, clips, etc, so you can have your desk’s drawers tidy!). You can also make them in different colors to make it easy to identify what is inside.

Now, I’m curious: How do YOU organize your children’s toys? Please, share in the comments below!

A qué me refiero? A cajitas de origami!

Material necesario? Solo papel!

One of the questions that I get asked the most whenever someone finds out that I don’t eat dairy is: “what do you drink with your coffee?”. When I reply saying that I can chose between soy, nut, oats or even date milk, people normally mention how expensive these are.

And it is true, store-bought vegetable milks are expensive. But the good news is that they are also very easy to make at home!

I made this batch of almond milk a week ago, when I was preparing for my detox and it took me no longer than 15 minutes. When I was making it, I thought that some of you may like to learn how I do it, so I decided to write this DIY. In this occasion I made 100% almond milk, but you can replace almonds with hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, walnuts…any nut! And the beauty of it is that the proportions remain the same. You can even mix different nuts (almond and hazelnut milk is delicious) to experiment and add variety. Oh! And there’s an added bonus: nut flour! The traces of nut that remain after straining the milk can be dried in the oven and used as nut flour in baking! Isn’t that great?

So, what do you need to make nut milk? well, nuts of course, water, a blender and a cheesecloth. If you have a mesh strainer, so much the better but if you don’t, that’s ok too.

Ready to get started? Here’s the recipe:

Almond Milk (makes 1 litre)

Ingredients: 1 cup almonds, 4 cups water.Optional: 1 tablespoon of honey/agave or other sweetener.

Preparation:

1) Soak the almonds in water for at least 4 hours (I leave them overnight)

2) Drain the almonds and put them in a small bowl. Pour boiling water over them and let them rest for 5 minutes. This will allow the peel to come off easily, just by rubbing it off the almonds.

3) Put the blanched almonds in a blender and add 4 cups of water. Blend until the almonds are not visible anymore.

4) Put a cheesecloth over a bowl and pour the milk on it. The cheesecloth will capture the pieces of nut that are too big.

5) Pour the milk in a bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

6) Put the nut pieces on a baking tray and place it in the oven at 115C until they are dry (it can take a while, just be careful not to let them brown). Store in an airtight container and use in baking!

Did you like this recipe? Had you even make nut milk at home before? Please, share in the comments below!
